About chicks in pink
Breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer diagnosed in females in Australia. And with one in nine women diagnosed before the age of 85, it’s no wonder Mater has a mission to raise funds which will have a positive, significant and real impact on people who are affected by this disease.
The chicks in pink lottery is a competition where anyone can enter to win prizes, which could be life-changing. The funds raised provide tangible and immediate benefits to women with breast cancer cared for at Mater. They support these women in real ways by providing specially fitted bras for every woman that undergoes a mastectomy at Mater, and assist those women who are receiving treatment and suffering financial stress.
To assist mothers with breast cancer, Mater’s Mindful Parenting Program provides avenues in which they learn to explain the different treatment stages to their children in a manner that helps young ones understand. This makes getting through this difficult time a little easier. Mater also sponsors a Young Women’s Group (women under 40) who are undergoing treatment of breast cancer at Mater – women like Clancy Follett.
With a family history of breast cancer, Clancy was only 38 and trying to get pregnant when a lump was discovered in her breast. Dr Lambley performed a lumpectomy at Mater and later removed her lymph nodes. Six cycles of chemo were followed by six weeks of radiation. Almost two years since her diagnosis, Clancy continues to have regular check-ups and takes daily medication. She has now returned to work for three days a week and says that, “With the help of people at the Mater and Chicks in Pink, I was able to get through my breast cancer, so I encourage everyone to support the Chicks in Pink lottery and help breast cancer patients and research.”
