All the way from Atherton, little Mackie touches a million hearts

Just four years old and hailing from Atherton in North Queensland, Mackenzie has endured more than most people do in a lifetime.

Earlier this year, while most children were enjoying their chocolate Easter eggs, little Mackie was fighting for his life in the intensive care unit at Cairns Base Hospital.

Mackenzie's ordeal started when he presented to Atherton Hospital with a high fever and a rash. The toddler was non responsive on arrival but thanks to the quick actions of staff he was rushed to Cairns Base Hospital and diagnosed with Meningococcal disease. His condition rapidly deteriorated before he was transferred to the Mater Hospital in Brisbane for specialist care.

Attached to a ventilator and placed on dialysis, the car loving youngster spent nine days in an induced coma while his tiny body battled the disease.

Mackenzie's dad Jeremy describes this time as "just terrifying" but credits his son's fighting spirit and the exceptional care he received to helping Mackie beat the odds.

"You don’t get much worse than that. We are just so grateful that Mackenzie was in such great hands. The staff at Atherton, Cairns and the Mater were just amazing all round" he said.

"It would have been much easier for him to give up and he didn’t and he won't. There’s nothing he can’t overcome now, he's proven that" said Jeremy.

Since waking with his family by his side on April 2, Mackenzie has slowly started to regain his strength.

Most of his physical wounds are now heeled and the bandages have been removed, but little Mackie is still unable to walk on his bare feet or play in the sand pit with his friends. The youngster, who is receiving ongoing treatment at the Mater will also require a kidney transplant as a result of his illness.

Please help Cairns Base Hospital and the Mater Children's Hospital to care for seriously ill children like Mackenzie by purchasing a ticket in Mater Prize Home Lottery No.220.
