One Mater researcher has won a grant to help make chemotherapy safer continuing on MMRI’s mission of medical innovation to benefit all.
Mater Medical Research Institute (MMRI) has gained a world class reputation by being a prominent player in Australia and international research. Their focus is to ensure rapid translation of research findings into clinical practice with the aim of improving the quality of life for patients and ultimately human health. Or in simpler terms, better care through research.
Chemotherapy treatment uses medicine to weaken and destroy cancer cells in the body, and over the years, many people have been successfully treated. Yet despite the best treatments, some side effects are very difficult to control. Approximately one third of the 24 000 cancer patients who receive chemotherapy each year suffer from an infection during, or soon after receiving chemotherapy as a consequence of the immune-suppression linked to treatment. Dr Ingrid Winkler, one of MMRI’s researchers who was awarded in 2011 with a National Health and Medical Research Council Career Development Award (one of only eight in Australia), has now won a Queensland Government grant to undertake further research into making chemotherapy safer.
Dr Winkler’s research aims to reduce the side-effects of chemotherapy and is particularly pertinent for patients undergoing repeated rounds of high-dose chemotherapy including breast, ovarian, small cell lung cancer and leukaemia.
“My discoveries will benefit these patients and their recovery from cancer, allowing them to resume their work and society commitments more rapidly after chemotherapy,” Dr Winkler said. Being able to get healthier quicker is what we all desire for the people we know and love who are affected by cancer.
