Two months before a baby is due is normally a time of blissful excitement—a time spent decorating rooms, choosing names and preparing a tiny new wardrobe. But for one expectant Brisbane couple, the birth of their first baby suddenly became a frightening emergency.
First-time mum Marissa was just 31 weeks pregnant when she experienced unexpected blood loss and had to undergo an emergency caesarean at Mater Mothers’ Hospital’.
When tiny Tait was born, he weighed only 1.8 kg—four pounds. In his first few moments, he was rushed to Mater’s Neonatal Critical Care Unit needing extra help from a CPAP machine to breathe. For five long weeks, Tait’s mum and dad watched and waited for the day they could bring him home. It wasn’t until four weeks before his original due date that they finally got to do so.
Every year at Mater, we care for more than 2000 premature and sick babies like Tait from across Queensland and beyond. And thankfully, today Tait is a bright, spirited and healthy little boy—because of the generous support of people just like you.
