Highgate’s history
Highgate Hill was first settled in 1856, with Dornoch Terrace (then known as ‘The Broad Road’) as its thoroughfare. Its first settler was Mr Trimble, an officer at the Customs House, followed shortly thereafter by the Wilson family. By the late 1880s the area became heavily populated by European settlers and much of the land around Dornoch Terrace was subdivided into estates to accommodate the growth. Dornoch Terrace became the premier street of the estates and attracted the wealthy and elite who built a mix of Federation and Victorian style homes.
Highgate Hill is thought to have acquired its name from an early resident, George Wilson (whose house was at the top of Bellevue Street).
Highgate Hill Park was established in 1902 and the ornate white pavilion was installed, which still stands today. This park could be your back yard; as the luxurious Mater Prize Home apartment on offer is located directly next to (and offers uninterrupted views) of the parkland.
Thanks to its early settlement, there are many heritage listed sites throughout Highgate Hill, including the Torbreck.
Torbreck
The high-rise situated next door to The Highgate might look familiar to you. If so, it’s because the building is none other than the Torbreck Home Units—the first high-rise residential development built in Queensland! Named Torbreck to recognise the small timber cottage that once sat on the land, construction commenced in 1957 and the building was completed in 1960.
Being the first of its kind, it drew a lot of publication and media attention. Due to its size, Torbreck is a visible landmark throughout Brisbane (much the same as Pointcorp’s The Highgate now is). The building was originally designed as mix-use, meaning they planned to dedicate a portion of the building to shops and restaurants (on the ground level); however this was never brought to fruition.
On 17 December 1999, Torbreck was added to the Queensland Heritage Register.
